Sungrow introduces new residential solutions with EV charger to enable more powerful

Maximizing consumption of self-generated power has never been more relevant. Due to high electricity prices, both homes and businesses are on the lookout for cutting-edge tech solutions to optimize the use of their rooftop PV’s output and gain greater energy independence. And some new products coming from Sungrow are designed to do exactly that, pushing the envelope on innovation and quality. As rising gas prices continue to push up the cost of electricity across Europe, the economic burden on businesses and households is increasing. Those with solar on their rooftops are better positioned to deal with such price hikes and are looking for ways to maximize every advantage of their systems. For solar homes seeking to increase their energy independence, the way to go is all electric. Ideally, households should optimize the use of each and every green electron their rooftop PV systems are producing and direct them to their batteries for greater self-consumption and their wallboxes to power their transportation needs. The forward-thinking R&D team at Chinese manufacturer Sungrow has already come up with a solution to meet all these needs in one. Its 3-phase all-in-one smart system featuring a hybrid inverter and battery solution, EV charger, and fully integrated monitoring iSolarCloud allows homeowners to embrace full control of their energy production and consumption. The three-phase hybrid inverter and the battery included in the kit have been on the market for some time, but when coupled with the AC011E-01 EV Charger, an 11kW AC charger with IP 65 protection, their benefits are multiplied. Charging the electric vehicle from solar+storage+EV charger as opposed to charging from the grid is not only superior for environmental reasons, but also in terms of savings.

Building an effective meteorological station for solar PV

Weather conditions have a huge influence on photovoltaic output. Even intermittent cloud cover can have a dramatic effect on incident solar energy, while other factors like air temperature, wind direction and speed, precipitation, humidity, and air pressure can all influence the efficiency of solar cells. Monitoring weather conditions accurately is crucial to understand variations in PV plant performance. While variations in weather conditions may be of only passing concern to the average domestic PV user, they are of critical importance for commercial and industrial PV systems. For large installations, even small relative fluctuations in performance can make a huge difference to overall productivity, and any source of output variation must be closely monitored to ensure the overall system is performing optimally. In these cases, meteorological monitoring is essential to determine whether variations in output are due to weather conditions, or indicative of more serious hardware degradation or malfunction. Weather monitoring is, therefore, an essential part of understanding PV system health and scheduling maintenance on time. Analysis of historical data – on precipitation and wind conditions, for example – enables seasonal trends to be uncovered, which can in turn be used to optimize cleaning and maintenance schedules on a seasonal basis. Which weather parameters are important for solar PV? Solar irradiance Measurements of solar irradiance are crucial to determine the efficiency of a solar plant. This is usually expressed in terms of a performance radio (PR): the actual yield of the plant (how much energy it produces in a given time period) expressed as a percentage of its theoretical yield (how much energy it could produce in that time period assuming the panels convert the incident light into energy at their nominal efficiency).

Freight costs edge toward 4% of solar module costs, near pre-pandemic levels

Freight costs fell for the 39th straight week to account for roughly 4% of solar module costs – close to pre-pandemic levels. PV consultant Asier Ukar tells pv magazine that this trend will likely continue over the short term. Freight costs have fallen significantly in recent months and are now approaching pre-pandemic levels, according to Drewry, a UK-based consultant for the shipping industry. The company’s World Container Index (WCI) shows that freight costs fell by 7% this week, for the 39th consecutive week of decline, and by 74% from the same week in 2021. “The latest Drewry WCI composite index of $2,404 per 40-foot container is now 77% below the peak of $10,377 reached in September 2021,” said the consultancy. “It is 36% lower than the five-year average of $3,768, indicating a return to more normal prices, but remains 82% higher than average 2019 (pre-pandemic) rates of $1,420.” Asier Ukar, the managing director of PI Berlin S.L., told pv magazine that container shipping costs ranged between $1,500 and $2,000 before the pandemic. “At the peak of the pandemic and post-pandemic, it reached $20,000,” he said. In August 2021, panels cost around $0.27/W and their share of free-on-board (FOB) module pricing was around 20%. “Shipping costs now more or less $3,500, which means more or less around $0.01/W for a container with 620 modules with each a capacity of 400 W,” said Ukar. “Due to the Covid-19 crisis, most of the ports in the European Union and the United States were congested and the containers did not arrive at the port on time, which led to a reduction in the quantity and a consequent increase in prices.”

Longi claims world’s highest efficiency for silicon solar cells

Longi said it has achieved a 26.81% efficiency rating for an unspecified heterojunction solar cell, as confirmed by Germany’s Institute for Solar Energy Research Hamelin (ISFH) Chinese PV module maker Longi has revealed that it has achieved a power conversion efficiency of 26.81% for an unspecified heterojunction (HJT) solar cell, based on a full-size silicon wafer, in mass production. The result has been confirmed by Germany’s ISFH. “We cannot disclose if the cell is n-type or p-type at this stage,” a company spokesperson told pv magazine. Martin Green, a professor at the University of New South Wales in Australia and the creator of the “solar cell efficiency tables,” said the result is the highest efficiency record for silicon solar cells to date. “This outstanding achievement will be included in the next version of efficiency tables published in the progress in photovoltaics,” he said, noting that the previous record of 26.7% was achieved by an unspecified Japanese manufacturer in 2017. Longi likely refers to the result achieved by Japanese chemical company Kaneka. Its 180cm² crystalline silicon device, which featured heterojunction and back-contact technology, achieved 26.63% efficiency. “Longi broke a new world record for silicon solar cell conversion efficiency with 26.74%, 26.78% and 26.81% respectively, which further affirmed Longi’s determination to continuously focus on R&D investment and promote industrial progress,” said the Chinese manufacturer.
